The type of braces a patient gets depends in part on the alignment, or misalignment, of their teeth. Each has pros and cons, and some will work better for certain patients.
- Traditional Metal Braces. Metal braces are attached to the front part of the patient’s teeth. A wire is strung them them and tightened, providing the force that slowly brings the teeth into proper alignment. They are the best choice for complex alignment issues.
- Aligners. Clear plastic aligners, like those made by Invisalign, are most effective on alignment issues that are not very complicated. One of the most attractive features about them is that they are clear, so they aren’t very noticeable. They can also be removed at mealtime and when you brush your teeth. They must be worn at least twenty-two hours a day; for the best results they should stay in all the time, except for eating and brushing.
- Ceramic Braces. These are similar to metal braces, but can be colored to match the patient’s teeth. That way they aren’t as noticeable. Many patients also say they’re a lot more comfortable than metal.
A fourth style is lingual braces. Made of metal, they attach to the back of the teeth, so they are less conspicuous. Because of that positioning, some patients say they are not very comfortable.
