Types of Dental Sedation

  • Nitrous Oxide: Laughing gas is the most common type of dental sedation. You will be awake and aware of your surroundings, but you will also feel lightheaded and euphoric, possibly causing fits of laughter. The effects wear off as soon as you breathe regular air.

  • Oral Sedation: Oral sedation comes in the form of a prescription pill, which you take shortly before your appointment. You will be awake, but you’ll feel very drowsy. You may have no memory of your visit. The effects of oral sedation wear off a few hours after the procedure.

  • Sedation: Light IV sedation keeps you awake, but you will be intensely relaxed. The effects will take several hours to wear off.

  • General Anesthesia: General anesthesia involves a complete loss of consciousness. You will not be aware of your surroundings or see or hear anything. You will have no memory of your treatment. The sedative will take several hours to wear off.
