5 Reasons To See Providence Dental

top dentist Las Vegas

When we are young, we feel invincible. We think we will live forever, and we know more than our parents. As we age, we soon discover that invincibility fades, forever isn’t as long as we thought, and we begin to appreciate the collective wisdom of those who have gone before us.

Since you have probably appreciated by now that your teeth are not invincible, today’s post offers some important advice about your oral health.

Developing a relationship with an experienced, dentist is critical for maintaining healthy smiles for every member of the family. Here are 5 reasons to make us your partner in oral health.

Visit Providence Dental For the Truth.
Visiting the dentist regularly is one of the wisest moves a parent can make for their child. A child’s oral health is a journey of guiding and correcting. Healthy habits are formed over time. Perhaps last year it was about refraining from chewing ice, this year it’s about brushing at the base of the molars and next year it will be about flossing daily. Best to get the bad habits repaired right away. The same holds true for adults. Regular visits can correct a course that may eventually lead to pain, gum disease, damaged teeth, or complete tooth loss. Potential problems are best discovered sooner than later.

Visit Providence Dental For the Atmosphere.
At Providence Dental the dentist makes it a point to confirm your needs. Whether you have urgent concerns or just need a routine check up on the state of your oral health, dentist Steven Do would like to be your first choice. We’ve got a staff second to none. We keep the atmosphere convenient.

Visit Providence Dental For the Discussion.
We deliver valuable assessment and discussion regarding family and pediatric dentistry, dental implants, and oral surgery. We provide fresh, clear information regarding your treatment. You can count on helpful care and state-of-the-art oral treatment. Call 702-852-2244 today to schedule an appointment.

Visit Providence Dental For the Answers.

When you enter our doors at 7181 N Hualapai Way Ste 105, Las Vegas, Nevada 89166, expect to get answers. What are the pros and cons of cosmetic dentistry or the advantages and disadvantages of braces and at what age are each appropriate? How much does it cost for porcelain veneers? Considering Dentures? Read This First.

dentures Las Vegas

Since we perform tooth extractions, we get many questions about tooth replacement options. For centuries, dentures were the only way to replace missing teeth. A denture is preferable to being toothless, but dental implants provide many advantages. Before you get dentures, consider the following.

4 Critical Things To Know About Dentures

1. Dentures are not the only replacement option for missing teeth. Dental implants used alone or in combination with a partial denture is often a more effective option for patients. Whereas a removable appliance replaces only the visible parts of teeth, an implant replaces both the root and crown of a tooth. This has critical implications. Dental implants can prevent bone recession that often occurs following tooth extractions. Dental implants can provide patients the near-normal ability to talk and chew.

2. There are more than one type of denture. Most individuals are familiar with the removable denture that replaces a complete upper or lower arch. There are also partial dentures that are used for patients who have some existing teeth. Partial dentures can be fixed in the mouth or removable.

3. Even if you have worn dentures for a while, you may be a good candidate for implant-anchored dentures. Bone grafting can strengthen existing bone in some cases. Schedule an appointment with dentist Steven Do to find out if you are a suitable candidate.

4. Regardless of your tooth replacement configuration—full dentures, partial dentures, or tooth implants—you still need to practice correct oral hygiene. Removable appliances should be cleaned daily.

Periodontal Disease Is Linked To Systemic Diseases

gum disease treatment Las Vegas

What do your gums do?

The soft tissue in your mouth, like skin, has an important job. It safeguards the roots of your teeth. It also provides a barrier for the connective tissues and ligaments that hold your teeth in their sockets. Plus the alveolar bone in which your teeth are anchored.

What is gum disease?

Gum disease starts with inflammation. Gums become swollen and tender. In its early stages, gum disease is called gingivitis. As the disease advances, the gums pull away from the teeth, developing pockets. This is called periodontitis or periodontal disease.

What causes gum disease?

Bacteria are always present in the oral cavity. When it is left on the teeth and gums, it turns into plaque. Plaque is a thick coating of bacteria on your gums and teeth. Plaque accumulates if it is not removed by rinsing, brushing, and flossing. If plaque accumulates in the gumline pockets, the gums can start receding. When plaque hardens, it is called tartar or calculus. You can’t brush away tartar with your toothbrush. You need to have a professional dental cleaning.

What are signs of gum disease?

  • Tender gums
  • Bad breath
  • Loose gums
  • A change in the color of gums
  • Loose or shifting teeth
  • Pain and tenderness
  • Pus between teeth and gums
  • Teeth that appear longer
  • Growing spaces between teeth
  • Changes in your bite

How does gingivitis threaten your health?

Gum disease increases your risk of:

  • Stroke
  • Heart disease
  • Heart attacks
  • Diabetes
  • Cancer
  • Alzheimer’s disease
  • Osteoporosis
  • Asthma
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Low infant birth weight

Can periodontal disease be prevented?

Yes. Proper dental hygiene, professional dental cleanings, and a wholesome diet can keep gums healthy.

For information on treatment for periodontitis, schedule a gum disease exam and consultation by calling 702-852-2244.

Are Dental Implants Too Expensive?

implant dentures Las Vegas

One of the persistent misconceptions about tooth implants is that they are too pricey. Perhaps you have considered implants but think the price is too steep. Let’s talk about the cost of dental implants.

Look At The Big Picture

A tooth implant is not cheap, it is an expensive treatment. But you need to look at the whole picture when comparing dental implants to alternative restoration options.

Dentures Aren’t A Once-and-Done Solution

There are many styles of conventional dentures and a broad range of price points. While the upfront cost of dentures may be less, they need regular relines and occasional replacement.

A Dental Bridge May Not Last As Long

Dental bridges aren’t designed to last as long as dental implant procedures. They typically last from 7 to 10 years with proper care. An issue with dental bridges is that it is often difficult to clean under and around them. Because of this, some dental bridge patients develop tooth decay in adjacent teeth. Restoring decayed teeth can be a collateral expense if the patient doesn’t adequately clean the teeth and gums around the bridge.

Implants Are A Long-Term Solution

Implants last much longer. Though implant manufacturers won’t allow us to promise that the implant will last indefinitely, with daily oral hygiene and twice-yearly dental visits, they can last for decades. We have patients whose implants are doing fine even though they have been in place beyond the estimated life span. We invite you to schedule an implant consultation. We can discuss your oral condition and how long you can expect dental implants to last.

It’s important to understand that the crown placed on the abutment may not last as long as the post. A crown is constructed to last from 10 to 15 years.

Can You Put A Price On Beautiful Teeth That Function Like Your Natural Teeth?

Dental implants provide near-natural function and look identical to natural teeth. Implants don’t have the drawbacks of dentures. They don’t slide around, restrict taste, or irritate gums.

Can You Put A Price On Your Face?

Implants guard against bone loss that changes the shape of the face, causing the cheeks and chin area to sink. Bone loss can make you look far older than your years.

Implants Are A Worthwhile Investment

The implant patients at Providence Dental believe durable dental implants are a beneficial investment because they have such a profound effect on quality of life.

Do you have missing teeth? We invite you to set up a consultation. We can answer all of your dental implant questions and discuss financing options.

Signs Of Oral Cancer: What Not To Ignore

oral cancer signs Las Vegas

Today’s message focuses on a very serious topic—oral (oropharyngeal) cancers. The medical community distinguishes oral cancers as a subset of head and neck cancers.

Oral cancers can develop in the following locations:

  • The tongue
  • The roof of the mouth and under the tongue
  • The inside of the cheeks
  • The oropharynx (the part behind the soft palate)
  • The salivary glands
  • The lips

Oral Cancers Are Particularly Deadly

Over 50,000 men and women annually are diagnosed with a type of oral cancer. They are more than twice as prevalent in men. There is no disparity when it comes to blacks or whites. Oral cancers claim over 10,000 victims per year.

The statistics reveal that only 57 percent of those diagnosed this year will be alive in five years. Talk about a grim outlook.

Let’s discuss the common—and the not-so-common—warning signs of oral cancer.

Any sore or lump in the mouth or throat should be taken seriously. Any white or red patch could also be a symptom.

Receiving an oral cancer screening is another reason to visit Providence Dental twice a year for an exam. Healthcare providers who don’t have the specific training for early onset oral cancer may confuse or overlook early signs.

Here, at Providence Dental, dentist Do can tell you if you should be worried or not.

The Cold Sore Connection

Firstly, we know cold sores are not dinner-talk for most men and women. However, did you know that if you have a history of cold sores, you are at an incresed risk for receiving oropharyngeal (oral) cancer?

Don’t Ignore These Signs!

You will want to get checked out if you:

  1. Have a lump or thickening in your throat
  2. Have white or red patches on your tongue, tonsils, or lining of your cheeks and gums
  3. Notice numbness of any oral feature
  4. Have any type of lesion, cut, or canker-type sore that doesn’t heal within 14 days

Less-common symptoms include tongue pain and loose teeth. A hoarse voice that doesn’t go away should be a concern. Unexplained tooth discoloration is rare but not unheard of.

It’s a misconception to think any of these signs can’t lead to problems.

Early Diagnosis Can Save Your Life

Getting checked for oral (or any) cancer regularly is vital for multiple reasons, but it is ultimately necessary because you want to catch it early. So you have the highest chance of survival. While it typically does not start to show symptoms until around age 40, it occurs in younger patients as well.

Smokeless Tobacco

It is also more prevalent for those who use smokeless, (chewing or spit) tobacco to get oral cancer. Many men and women argue that these are safer than smoking standard cigarettes. This may be true when it comes to lung cancer. But you need to consider the of contracting other conditions like oral cancer(s), pancreatic cancer, and/or chronic infections that can result in heart issues later on.

Also, don’t assume vaping is less harmful. Though there is less research on the health risks of vaping, it certainly hasn’t been proven to be risk-free.

Smoking + Alcohol = A Dangerous Combination

While we are referring to tobacco and vaping, we also need to mention alcohol. For many men and women, they go together. Those who both smoke and drink have a 15 times greater likelihood of developing oral cancer than those who do neither.

Exposure to UV Rays Boosts Risk of Lip Cancer

Lip cancer can be considered both an oral cancer and a skin cancer. Most of us have been warned that unprotected sun exposure is detrimental. But many of us forget about the lips when applying sunscreen. Pick up some SPF balm when you sunscreen. Don’t forget that eating, drinking and licking your lips can wipe it away. Reapply often. Wear wide-brim hats as protection. Be especially careful between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m.

Mouthwash Facts In Las Vegas

Mouthwash Facts In Las Vegas

Hi, I am dentist Steven Do.  Thanks for visiting my Providence Dental blog. In today’s post I would like to discuss mouthwash. Many Nevada residents use mouthwash to freshen their breath and help retard tooth decay. Mouthwash should never be used exclusively though, good oral hygiene starts with thorough tooth brushing and flossing. Mouthwash is an optional tool in your dental hygiene tool box.

It is important for Nevada residents to know what kind of mouthwash they are using. Some mouthwashes merely mask bad breath while others help reduce the bacteria that causes plaque and bad breath.

If you are one of the Las Vegas residents that suffers from bad breath it is important to choose a mouthwash that contains ingredients that help prevent tooth decay such as fluoride. But Nevada men and women also need to use caution when using mouthwashes because many of the ingredients are dangerous when the recommended amount of mouthwash is exceeded.

Some of the poisonous components are chlorhexidine gluconate, ethanol, hydrogen peroxide, and methyl salicylate. If you experience throat pain, vomiting, headache, or abdominal pain after using mouthwash, seek medical help immediately. The National Poison Control Center (1-800-222-1222) can answer questions about mouthwash ingredients.

At Providence Dental we want everyone to have great smelling breath, but to use caution when treating their bad breath. Make sure to read your mouthwash label and follow all instructions given.

In addition to preventative dental care, Providence Dental offers a wide range of cosmetic dentistry procedures. If you are a resident anxious to have a whiter, brighter smile talk to Providence Dental about teeth whitening. Providence Dental also provide family and pediatric dentistry and dental implants.

At Providence Dental we have been improving the smiles of residents in Las Vegas, Las Vegas and the surrounding areas since 2016. Contact us today to schedule a consultation.

Sleep Apnea Treatment In Las Vegas

sleep apnea dentist Las Vegas

What is sleep apnea?

It’s a potentially health-threatening condition in which your breathing periodically stops while you sleep.

Suspect you might have sleep apnea? Read through these common symptoms. They may help you determine if you need to go see your medical doctor.

Signs of Sleep Apnea

  • Excessive Daytime Sleepiness
  • Insomnia
  • Sleep Deprivation
  • Excessive Snoring
  • Episodes of Not Breathing
  • Mouth Breathing
  • Dry Mouth/Throat
  • Fatigue
  • Frequent Headaches
  • Irritability

Don’t misunderstand, having one of these symptoms is typically fine. If you have two or more, it’s time to see your physician.

Three Types of Sleep Apnea

There are three different types of sleep apnea. Obstructive sleep apnea describes a condition where your throat muscles relax. Central sleep apnea, which occurs when your brain doesn’t send proper signals to control your breathing. The final type is called complex sleep apnea syndrome. This serious form occurs when a patient has both of the other apnea types.

If you doctor diagnoses Obstructive Sleep Apnea, it’s important to explore all the treatments. Some types of sleep apnea can be treated with a dental appliance. Treatment can ease your symptoms and help prevent heart problems and other issues.

How Do Veneers Create Stunning Smiles?

Veneers Create Stunning Smiles in Las Vegas Veneers have a multitude of applications in Las Vegas cosmetic dentistry. With veneers, you can transform your smile without significant restorative dental work.

Is your tooth enamel worn and thin? Tooth-colored porcelain veneers have the brilliance and translucency of healthy tooth enamel. Many Las Vegas dental patients have received veneers to cover worn enamel. Some believe they look twenty years younger!

Have your teeth developed uneven edges? Tooth grinding, natural wear and other factors can roughen tooth edges. Veneers are a minimally invasive correction for uneven tooth edges.

Do you have chips or cracks in your teeth? If your teeth are otherwise healthy, veneers provide a flawless tooth surface. Are your teeth yellow or gray? Veneers can fix that, too. Veneers can be fabricated in any shade to perk up your smile while still blending naturally with your other teeth and skin tones.

Porcelain veneers are paper-thin, tooth-shaped covers that are affixed to the front of teeth. Traditional veneers required the removal of a thin layer of tooth structure. Prepless veneers are applied to unaltered teeth.

Veneers are strong, natural looking, and one of the most affordable cosmetic dentistry procedures in NW Las Vegas and Centennial Hills. Of course, a tooth with extensive damage may need a dental crown.

At Providence Dental, we would be happy to show you what veneers can do for you. Providence Dental is located at 7181 N Hualapai Way Ste 105 in Las Vegas. We provide premium dental care for many of your friends and neighbors in the greater Las Vegas area. Our phone number is 702-852-2244.

3 Dental Dangers For Toddlers

Centennial Hills family dentist

Hello new parents! We know that keeping babies and toddlers safe and healthy requires constant effort. You secure them tightly in their car seats, lock your medicine cabinet, and guard the stairway with a gate. You take them to your pediatrician for immunizations, check-ups, and an occasional prescription for an antibiotic.

Providence Dental wants to remind you about another critical component of child wellness: oral health. Sadly, we see too many cases of completely preventable child decay. You have probably received the following important advice, but it bears repeating:

Don’t put babies to bed with a bottle!
Don’t allow kids to drink juice continually during the day!
Prevent frequent snacking on sugary foods!

Oral health is intrinsically connected to overall physical health and normal development. If your oral hygiene is not up to par, now is the time to shape up and help your young child develop optimal oral health practices that will serve them well throughout their life.

Providence Dental recommends beginning twice-yearly dental visits around age one or when the first tooth breaks through. Our friendly staff helps young patients feel comfortable and relaxed during their exams.

Dentist Steven Do can advise you on thumb sucking, dental sealants, normal child tooth development, braces, athletic tooth protection, fluoride, or any other pediatric dental issue.

If your toddler has not yet visited the dentist, schedule an appointment ASAP by calling us at 702-852-2244.
