Not All Smile Makeovers Are Created Equal

Centennial Hills cosmetic smile makeover

Hello, Las Vegas! Welcome to the Providence Dental dental blog. Let’s talk about smile makeovers. Some Las Vegas patients wonder if  the term is synonymous with general cosmetic dentistry.

Are the placement of four veneers considered a smile makeover? Well, yes and no. If your smile is attractive and healthy except for some chips in your upper front teeth, veneer placement may remedy the few cosmetic problems and result in a remarkable smile.

Generally, however, a complete smile transformation combines several carefully-chosen cosmetic dentistry procedures performed at the same time for a complete smile renewal. In other words, the sum is greater than the parts.

For example, one treatment plan could include crown restorations, veneers for teeth that are misshapen but otherwise healthy, tooth-colored filling replacement for old amalgam fillings, and teeth whitening for the crowning touch.

I am Dr. Steven Do, and I have been practicing general and cosmetic dentistry in Las Vegas, Nevada since 2016. Performing successful smile makeovers makes my profession extremely fulfilling. Patients who plan to receive a smile makeover should take their time choosing a dentist to perform it. I invite you to schedule a consultation so we can discuss your needs and wishes. During the consultation, I can tell you about my extensive experience and show you before and after pictures of satisfied patients.

When I design a custom smile makeover, I study several elements in addition to the teeth. After all, the teeth are just one component of the patient’s face. The gumline, lips, mouth, facial shape, facial structure, coloring, and patient’s age affect the scope of the design. This comprehensive approach to a smile makeover achieves fantastic results and sets our practice apart.

Healthy Lifestyles

Las Vegas dentist teeth whitening

Dental health and a sensational smile depend on much more than simply brushing regularly. In today’s Providence Dental post, we present a quick refresher course on essential lifestyle practices that affect oral health. You are probably familiar with most of these recommendations, but it is helpful to get a reminder once in a while. We encourage all of our patients to maintain a lifestyle that promotes dental health as well as overall physical health. After all, the two are inseparable.

DO:

Eat a nutritious diet.
Eat calcium-rich dairy products like milk, cheese, and yogurt to neutralize acids that attack enamel.
Brush gently but meticulously at least twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste.
Make sure you clean thoroughly between teeth with dental floss or interdental cleaners such as flossing picks.
If you have children, talk to your dentist about water fluoridation. If your municipal water supply is not fluoridated, you may want to give your children fluoride supplements.
Get your teeth professionally cleaned twice a year.
Have a dental examination twice yearly with your dentist.

DON’T:

Eat a sugar frequently. Sugar triggers the production of detrimental cavity-causing acids that weaken enamel.
Snack throughout the day. This speeds up plaque production and subjects the teeth to constant bombardment with acids.
Chew on ice.
Use your teeth as tools. Ever.
Drink energy drinks.
Get oral piercings.
Ignore tooth pain or sensitivity.

If you have oral pain or haven’t visited a dentist in a while, call Providence Dental  at 702-984-2547 to schedule an appointment with Steven Do. Tooth problems get worse over time – especially if there is decay or gum disease.

At Providence Dental, we serve the Las Vegas area with exceptional dental care including general and cosmetic dentistry. Ask us about family and pediatric dentistry, cosmetic dentistry, dental implants and oral surgery.

Water Fluoridation Prevents Tooth Decay

Water Fluoridation In Nevada Prevents Tooth Decay

Hello! Welcome to our dentistry blog. Today’s critical message from Providence Dental concerns fluoride and children’s dental health. I’m Steven Do and I have been practicing dentistry in Las Vegas since 2016.

When I examine a new patient for the first time, I can usually tell whether the person drank fluoride-adjusted municipal water while growing up. Generally, their teeth are healthier than people who had lower fluoride levels in their tap water.

Ideally, adequate fluoride intake combined with proper oral hygiene, good nutrition, and regular dental visits keep teeth healthy and protects teeth from cavities.

However, this mighty element also helps teeth remineralize if acids have already compromised the vital enamel. For decay prevention and teeth strengthening, sufficient fluoride is indispensable.

If you have children and your Nevada municipal water supply does not have the recommended level of fluoride, you may want to consider giving your kids a fluoride supplement. The fluoride will strengthen the primary teeth that have already erupted and also the adult teeth that are forming.

The American Dental Association supports water fluoridation:

‘More than 65 years ago, on January 25, 1945, Grand Rapids, Michigan became the world’s first city to adjust the level of fluoride in its water supply. Since that time, fluoridation has dramatically improved the oral health of tens of millions of Americans. Community water fluoridation is the single most effective public health measure to prevent tooth decay.’ http://www.ada.org/fluoride.aspx

At Providence Dental, we provide trusted dental care for all members of the family including general and cosmetic dentistry. We serve the Las Vegas area.

If you are interested in children’s fluoride supplements, call Providence Dental at 702-984-2547 to schedule a pediatric dental evaluation.

3 Cavity Fighters For Las Vegas Kids

Centennial Hills Pediatric and Cosmetic Dentistry

Most parents know children’s oral health basics: brush regularly, reduce sugar intake, limit snacking, and get adequate amounts of calcium and Vitamin D. Providence Dental recommends three additional tools for preventing cavities in toddlers and children:

  • Sealants
  • Fluoride supplements
  • Oral rinses

Resin dental sealants bond to the chewing surfaces of the back teeth, protecting the pits and fissures from decay. Some dental insurance providers cover dental sealants, so check with your provider if you are considering them.

Fluoride supplements help strengthen still-forming teeth prior to eruption. You can get a prescription from your pediatrician or talk to us at Providence Dental. There is one caveat, however: if you have fluoridated water, your pediatrician may advise against taking additional fluoride in supplement form.

If your child is taking fluoride supplements, is an oral rinse redundant? Actually, no. Fluoride supplements help strengthen teeth that are still forming, but a fluoride rinse helps teeth that have already come in. Oral rinses containing fluoride can be purchased at most grocery stores. Make sure you buy one specifically formulated for children. Products labeled as a mouthwash are usually intended only for breath-freshening and may not contain fluoride.

I recommend children use an oral rinse after they brush and floss at night. Rinses are most effective when they are the last substance on teeth before kids go to bed. At Providence Dental, we believe that with proper preventative dentistry, Las Vegas area kids can enjoy healthy teeth for life

Las Vegas Mouths And Stomatitis

Las Vegas Mouths And Stomatitis

Ouch! The mouth is a bad place for injuries, sores, or inflammation. It seems that even the smallest irritation in the mouth can cause serious discomfort for dental patients.

These non-specific irritations in the mouth have a name. They are called stomatitis.

A good general definition for stomatitis is the inflammation of the membranes in the mouth. These usually affect a person’s ability to speak, eat, and even get to sleep at night.

Some common causes of stomatitis can be canker sores, cold sores, gum disease, biting the inside of your mouth or your tongue, burning your mouth, and irritation caused by braces or broken teeth. Many sores in the mouth will generally clear up on their own in less than two weeks.

However, your dentist will determine if it is caused by a viral or bacterial infection and advise you on treatment. the symptoms of stomatitis with pain relievers and at-home remedies such as salt water rinses.

Gritting Your Teeth: Stress And Your Smile

Las Vegas how stress hurts your teeth

Doctors have been telling us for years that stress can increase the risk of everything from high blood pressure to depression. But how often do we think about how stress influences our smile? Here are some dental problems linked to stress.

Canker and Cold Sores
Cold sores are a symptom of the herpes simplex virus. Scientists don’t know exactly what causes canker sores but suspect they are related to infection, virus, or a weak immune system. If you are prone to mouth sores, you probably already know that stress seems to bring them on or prolong healing times. If you frequently get these sores, communicate with your doctor or dentist. Your healthcare provider can advise you on medications, diet, and stress reduction techniques.

Teeth Grinding

It’s no surprise that teeth grinding (bruxism) is bad for teeth. It starts with enamel wear, then loose teeth, and eventually tooth loss. During this progression, there may be other issues such as gum recession, headaches, and TMD (Temporomandibular Disorders). If you grind your teeth, it’s important to address this condition as soon as possible. In addition to stress, there are many factors that can cause or exacerbate bruxism. These include: malocclusion (bad bite), sleep apnea, and prescription depression and anxiety medications.

Your dentist may prescribe an appliance to protect your teeth and keep your jaw in the proper position while you are sleeping. Other treatments include cognitive behavior therapy, relaxation therapies, mandibular advancement devices, physical therapy, and medication. Your dentist can create a treatment plan and work with you and your doctor to manage or eliminate this condition.

Temporomandibular Disorders
There are many direct and indirect causes of TMD. For example, inability to manage stress may cause jaw clenching which, in turn, causes pain in the jaw joint. Other symptoms of TMD include tenderness, pain, or swelling in the neck, ear, face, or shoulder; popping or clicking sounds; and changes in bite alignment. Again, if you experience any of these, meet with your dentist.

Gum Disease
Stress can reduce your ability to fight plaque build-up which can cause gum disease.

Oral Hygiene
Some people forget brushing and flossing when life becomes problematic.

Diet
It’s not uncommon for people to consume more sugar, snack more often between meals, or drink more alcoholic beverages when experiencing increased stress. All this at a time when vigilant oral hygiene is often not a person’s first priority!

Tooth pain and untreated dental issues will only give you something else to worry about. Let’s nip this vicious cycle in the bud.

I’m Dr. Steven Do. If you haven’t seen a dentist in a while and are experiencing an unusually stressful period, I invite you to schedule an appointment with me by calling Providence Dental at 702-984-2547. Let’s determine the status of your oral health, schedule treatment if necessary, and create a plan to restore and maintain a healthy smile. Remember, a healthy smile will give you one less thing to worry about.
