Considering Dentures? Read This First.

dentures Las Vegas

Since we perform tooth extractions, we get many questions about tooth replacement options. For centuries, dentures were the only way to replace missing teeth. A denture is preferable to being toothless, but dental implants provide many advantages. Before you get dentures, consider the following.

4 Critical Things To Know About Dentures

1. Dentures are not the only replacement option for missing teeth. Dental implants used alone or in combination with a partial denture is often a more effective option for patients. Whereas a removable appliance replaces only the visible parts of teeth, an implant replaces both the root and crown of a tooth. This has critical implications. Dental implants can prevent bone recession that often occurs following tooth extractions. Dental implants can provide patients the near-normal ability to talk and chew.

2. There are more than one type of denture. Most individuals are familiar with the removable denture that replaces a complete upper or lower arch. There are also partial dentures that are used for patients who have some existing teeth. Partial dentures can be fixed in the mouth or removable.

3. Even if you have worn dentures for a while, you may be a good candidate for implant-anchored dentures. Bone grafting can strengthen existing bone in some cases. Schedule an appointment with dentist Steven Do to find out if you are a suitable candidate.

4. Regardless of your tooth replacement configuration—full dentures, partial dentures, or tooth implants—you still need to practice correct oral hygiene. Removable appliances should be cleaned daily.

Are Dental Implants Too Expensive?

implant dentures Las Vegas

One of the persistent misconceptions about tooth implants is that they are too pricey. Perhaps you have considered implants but think the price is too steep. Let’s talk about the cost of dental implants.

Look At The Big Picture

A tooth implant is not cheap, it is an expensive treatment. But you need to look at the whole picture when comparing dental implants to alternative restoration options.

Dentures Aren’t A Once-and-Done Solution

There are many styles of conventional dentures and a broad range of price points. While the upfront cost of dentures may be less, they need regular relines and occasional replacement.

A Dental Bridge May Not Last As Long

Dental bridges aren’t designed to last as long as dental implant procedures. They typically last from 7 to 10 years with proper care. An issue with dental bridges is that it is often difficult to clean under and around them. Because of this, some dental bridge patients develop tooth decay in adjacent teeth. Restoring decayed teeth can be a collateral expense if the patient doesn’t adequately clean the teeth and gums around the bridge.

Implants Are A Long-Term Solution

Implants last much longer. Though implant manufacturers won’t allow us to promise that the implant will last indefinitely, with daily oral hygiene and twice-yearly dental visits, they can last for decades. We have patients whose implants are doing fine even though they have been in place beyond the estimated life span. We invite you to schedule an implant consultation. We can discuss your oral condition and how long you can expect dental implants to last.

It’s important to understand that the crown placed on the abutment may not last as long as the post. A crown is constructed to last from 10 to 15 years.

Can You Put A Price On Beautiful Teeth That Function Like Your Natural Teeth?

Dental implants provide near-natural function and look identical to natural teeth. Implants don’t have the drawbacks of dentures. They don’t slide around, restrict taste, or irritate gums.

Can You Put A Price On Your Face?

Implants guard against bone loss that changes the shape of the face, causing the cheeks and chin area to sink. Bone loss can make you look far older than your years.

Implants Are A Worthwhile Investment

The implant patients at Providence Dental believe durable dental implants are a beneficial investment because they have such a profound effect on quality of life.

You don’t have to watch your teeth become duller and more discolored every year, either. Whether you are young, older or somewhere in the middle, in-office teeth whitening works wonders to perk up your smile.

I have been practicing dentistry since 2016. I have noticed that my patients who receive dental makeovers have only one regret; they wish they would have done it sooner! Save Money With Dental Implants At Providence Dental

Las Vegas Tooth ImplantsQ: For Las Vegas residents: When is the least expensive tooth replacement method really the most expensive?
A: When it ends up costing far more in the long run.

Many Las Vegas dentistry patients who lose a tooth do not understand the importance of replacing it with a dental implant. They wrongly believe that one missing tooth is not a significant problem. In fact, some NW Las Vegas people who have an abscessed tooth extracted are so glad the pain is gone that they forget that the extraction is not the solution. When a tooth is lost, the risk of losing the adjacent teeth increases dramatically.

Dr. David Scharf, a Board Certified Periodontist and Dental Implant Surgeon and a Clinical Assistant Professor at New York University College of Dentistry says:

“Many times consumers will choose to replace a missing tooth with a removable partial denture because it is the least expensive option. In the long run however, removable partial dentures may be more costly due the loss of adjacent teeth and the need for future replacements. Many people opt to replace teeth with dental implants because they do not compromise the survival of the adjacent teeth.”

Dr. Scharf notes…

“With the price of gasoline and food soaring people try to cut back wherever they can. Unfortunately choosing the least expensive options for tooth replacement can have some very costly ramifications down the road.”

If you are missing a tooth, you may still be able to save the adjacent teeth if receive an implant soon. An implant bonds with the jaw bone and helps maintain its stability.

Everything You Never Wanted To Know About Saliva

Las Vegas dry mouth relief

Saliva is a typically yucky substance which is, in reality, a finely balanced body fluid that not only maintains dental health but also helps with the digestion of your food.

So, without further ado, here are the main components of saliva.

1. Water. No surprise here! Your saliva is composed of water, for the most part.

2. Enzymes. Enzymes are vital biological catalysts that speed chemical reactions. The enzymes in saliva begin the process of digestion.

3. Immunoproteins. These are powerful cells that fight invaders, such as bacteria. The immunoproteins in saliva suppress the overgrowth of microbes in the mouth. This is critical for avoiding gingivitis and keeping the appropriate pH balance in the mouth.

4. Minerals. Saliva minerals help with maintaining the protective enamel surface of the teeth.

Most people produce enough saliva, but some suffer from dry mouth, which is a lack of saliva. This can be harmful to your dental health, so be sure to talk to your dentist if you are experiencing this.

How Do Implant Dentures Work?

implant dentures Las Vegas

Many people know that a dental implant is an ideal tooth restoration. Some don’t realize, however, that two or more can support a partial or full denture. This option, available at Providence Dental in North Las Vegas, can be a less expensive than having multiple implants while still providing many improvements compared to traditional dentures.

Today’s message answers the most common questions about implant dentures.

The first thing to know is that a fixed implant denture is called an “implant-supported” denture while a removable one is called an “implant-retained” denture.

What Are Implant Dentures?

Like conventional dentures, implant-supported dentures replace missing teeth. The difference is that they are attached to titanium posts which are surgically implanted into the jawbone.

Each post is called an implant. The implant fuses with the surrounding bone structure to create an incredibly durable restoration. These posts are similar to the implants that hold a crown, except instead of a crown, they have a clip that attaches to the denture, partial denture, or metal bar that holds the denture connectors. Implants can be used for both upper and lower dentures.

Bar-Retained and Ball-Retained Systems

There are two types of implant stabilization methods: bar-retained and ball-retained. For both, the denture is constructed with gum-colored acrylic for the base to which porcelain (or acrylic) false teeth are attached. The denture necessitates, at a minimum, two implants for stabilization.

With the ball-retained system, each post holds an attachment (male or female) that fits into a corresponding attachment on the denture. These are sometimes called “stud-attachment.”

With bar-retained dentures, a metal bar is anchored to two to five implants. The bar holds the connectors that connect to the denture.

If you are currently wearing traditional dentures, take to us at Providence Dental in North Las Vegas about implant supported dentures. We also provide orthodontics, and a full range of other dental services.

Think Before You Pierce

The Dangers of Oral PiercingIf you are considering puncturing your lip or tongue, this post is for you. The dentists at Providence Dental in North Las Vegas would like you to consider the following:

Infection
Your mouth is full of bacteria. Any opening in the tissue carries the risk of infection. The germs from your tongue and mouth can easily get into your bloodstream. Dentists and doctors are constantly treating acute infections caused by oral piercings. Oral infections can be a real problem and should be a major consideration before getting an oral piercing.

Tooth Damage
It should come as no surprise that having a piece of metal bang around in your mouth can easily damage tooth enamel. Though tooth enamel is very strong, once it’s chipped or cracked, it can only be restored with artificial material. Fortunately, Providence Dental in Las Vegas offers many tooth restoration options such as crowns and fillings, but our advice is to avoid the problem if you can.

Prolonged Bleeding and Swelling
The blood vessels in the tongue are often damaged when the tongue is pierced, causing prolonged bleeding and possible build-up of scar tissue. In some extreme cases, the tongue swells up enough to block the airway.

Gum Recession
A number of periodontal disease studies have shown that wearing oral jewelry is linked to periodontal disease which can result in tooth loss. Periodontal disease can cause gum recession which exposes the root of your teeth, potentially causing hypersensitivity and pain. Again, our advice is to avoid the trouble right from the start.

These are just a few of the dangers or oral piercings. At Providence Dental in North Las Vegas, we strongly recommend not getting any. Our services include family dentistry and emergency dentistry. Schedule an appointment with us today.

What Does A Missing Tooth Say About You?

Las Vegas Mini-ImplantsAt Providence Dental in Las Vegas, we know that a missing tooth is a big deal. Think about it: when you meet someone who is missing a front tooth, do you wonder if they were in an accident? Do you automatically make assumptions about their income, education and overall physical health?

Though it is extremely unfair, we are often judged (and misjudged) by our appearance. Even if a person is impeccably dressed and groomed, a missing front tooth detracts from the overall pleasing impression.

Here is a personal story from a woman who lost a tooth:

I lost my job and along with it my dental insurance, then a month later, one of my front teeth. It has been very hard to find work…. and I know the missing tooth has cost me several jobs.

Dental implants not only restore missing teeth, they restore self-confidence. Dental implants are a permanent solution for missing teeth. Studies have shown that after more than 20 years, the vast majority of dental implants placed by oral and maxillofacial surgeons continue to function at peak performance. If properly cared for, dental implants can last a lifetime.

Not all cosmetic dentistry is as extreme as teeth implants. There are many minimally-invasive remedies for unattractive smiles.

At Providence Dental, we provide dental implants and many other procedures. Schedule an appointment with us today.
